The Olympics are underway at the moment and I’m a huge enthusiast of big sporting events. I’ve been watching hours of the London Olympic games, across sports, as I find it fascinating how athletes apply themselves to their craft and how they perform under pressure. I’ve also had the joy of coaching a handful of athletes and health & fitness specialists and its great to learn how they apply themselves. Understanding how these high achievers perform can be useful in all walks of life and indeed its interesting to see how ultimately mindset can play an even more significant role in performance than even ones skills and abilities.
Here’s are 3 item from my latest newsletter that I thought you might find useful:
One of things I often talk about in my talks and workshops is ‘adopting the attitude of an athlete’.It’s a very useful metaphor that can be applied pretty much to anything that you want to achieve be it getting a better job, changing career, growing a business or if you’re working on personal life, social life or health and wellbeing.
- Study your field

- Give 100% every time
- Learn from wins and losses in equal measure
- Run your own race
- Keep your eye on the prize
- Celebrate every success
2) Magical mindset & ideal team
Like many of you I was watching the Euro football championships over the last few weeks. It was interesting to see – even at that level – how clearly some teams lacked the right approach, organisation and self belief. The England team first set their sights too low and then ultimately suffered from a lack of self belief and therefore in performing to their best. On the other hand Portugal’s Ronaldo, one of the world’s greatest players learned fell victim to his own ego and lack on consistently working with his team. With the finals almost in sights he sat back awaiting his moment of glory – which never came.
What is your mentality like? Do you believe in yourself, what you’re doing and why you are doing it? If not then why are you doing what you are doing?
Do you have the right team around you personally and professionally? If not it is your responsibility to address it. Some players may need to go. Some new blood may need to be brought it. You may need to raise you game.
2) Overcoming the hurdles of life
There will be major hurdles in life. This will not always going according to plan (that’s if you even have a plan – so many people who say that life isn’t going to plan don’t actually have a plan – and rarely have a ‘b’ plan).
Those who tend to be happiest and most successful are those who adjust best when things are not going according to plan. Anyone can perform well when things are going your way.
In the same way that a athlete adjusts their stride pattern when the clip a hurdle, what are the adjustments that you need to make personally, professionally, socially, romantically and in your mentality ?
