“Communication is the breath or death of every relationship.” – Rasheed Ogunlaru

My whole career has been about communications: in media, press and public relations, as a singer-songwriter, as a coach-speaker-author. I use this quote a lot when I run training courses on influence, networking, team development, leadership etc.

This quote is true in work, business, friendships and personal relationships. Effective communication requires: conscious-awareness, consideration, clarity, consideration and care. When delivering your message – which should really be a two-way dance – it should be clear, concise-comprehensive (depending on the the audience, issues and circumstances). It should be compelling and relevant. consistency and compassion are key.

Communication is about flow; it should be open, honest and respectful.  It is in the lack of consistency and compassion many relationships break down. And of course content is key.  So much so that I devote a whole chapter “Conversations” to it in my book Soul Trader.

Finally be mindful of capacity; what’s your and your target individual/group’s capacity to hear, engage, understand? How much have they got on/got going on in life/work? Be aware of how much communication / how often is apt for that individual or group. Many people are at burnout or speeding toward it.

Remember “Everything boils down to love and compassion – or its absence” – Rasheed Ogunlaru
